October is upon us and Halloween is just over a week away. Many parents are wondering how to make Halloween exciting for their children this year, with trick or treating restrictions happening across North America. There are still many activities to do with the kids to make this year’s Halloween a memorable one, including using 100% recycled paper egg cartons to create some spooky and easy crafts. These simple egg carton crafts are sure to add the creepy-crawly Halloween touch to your decorations. Plus, you can use these crafts to teach your kids about recycling and reducing plastic and foam waste while creating something fun. Gather around the kitchen table, snack on some candy and hot chocolate and get out the craft supplies, be inspired by these five creations that you can make too!
What you’ll need for these egg carton crafts:
Flying Bat
Cut the egg carton out so you have three egg carton cups attached together. To create the bat’s wings, cut v’s into the cups at the ends, creating points. Once you’ve finished cutting, paint the egg carton black. Add eyes by adding two white circles with black dots to the middle cup. Once the paint has dried, poke a hole in the top of the bat. Tie a knot at the end of your hemp or string and thread it through the hole so you can hang the bat in your house or outside on your tree.
Spooky Ghost
Cut out one egg cup from the recycled egg carton. Paint the egg carton cup all white. Once the egg carton dries, glue a piece of white paper tissue into the inside of the egg carton cup and poke a hole in the top of the ghost. Tie a knot at the end of your hemp or string and thread it through the hole. Give your house a fright by hanging these around your home or outside on your porch!
Monster Eyeballs
Cut the egg carton out so you have three egg carton cups attached together. Once you have these cut out, paint the carton white. Add blue, green or orange circles to the bottom groves of the egg carton. Add black dots for eyes, or get creative and create your own spooky eyeball design. Once dry, you can add a popsicle stick or pipe cleaner to the eyeballs so that you can hold up and ‘wear’. This is sure to frighten your friends.
Jack-O-Lantern
Cut out two egg carton cups and glue the inside edge of each cup together to create a sphere. Paint this orange. Once the orange paint dries, paint or draw a jack-o-lantern face onto your carton. Poke a hole in the top of your egg carton pumpkin and add a green pipe cleaner, green paper, or green string for its stem. These would make a gourd-geous centrepiece to any at-home Halloween party.
Frankenstein
Similar to the Jack-O-Lantern, cut out two egg carton cups and glue the inside edge of each cup together to create a sphere. Paint this green or purple. Once the paint dries, paint or draw a Frankenstein face onto your carton, adding stitches for his signature look. Add these as decorations around your house or on a windowsill.
If you’re a classroom teacher, these would also be a great Halloween craft to make in the classroom, ask your students to gather their egg cartons from home to bring in. This is an easy craft, with little effort on your end that is still very fun and creative for the kids.
